The University was established in March 1967. It was initially was called Kabwe Teachers’ College, the name derived from the town in which it is located in Zambia. In April 1971, the college was officially opened by the first Zambian President David Kaunda and the name was changed to Nkrumah Teachers’ College in recognition and honour of the late first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.

The college was designed to offers courses to pre-service students who specialise in any two teaching subjects at Grade 8 – 12 level at diploma level. In an effort to develop human resources in the education sector, the government of Zambia in 2008 upgraded the college to a university to offer degrees in the teaching subjects.

The first degree students started the following year 2009 in June. The government went further in reducing the fees that students pay to the institution so that many students are motivated to enrol for the programme. This was envisaged to attract many students to train as teachers.

The University offers degree programmes in Mathematics, Physic, Chemistry, Biology, Social Sciences and Business Studies.
