Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards of Circumstance for First-Year Students

Academic Scholarships
Muskingum offers academic scholarships to qualified students based on the strength of high school curriculum, grades in college-prep courses, and ACT/SAT results. The application for admission serves as the application for scholarships and awards unless otherwise noted.

The John Glenn Scholarship is Muskingum’s highest award – a four-year, full-tuition scholarship offered to a small number of entering first-year students through the Academic Scholarship Program.

Muskingum also offers Muskingum Academic Scholarships which range from $10,000 to $17,000 per year, and may be enhanced through an excellent performance in the Academic Scholarship Program. Program dates for first-year students entering in Fall 2018 are December 3 2016, January 28, or February 4, 2018.

Science Division Scholarships $500-$2,000 per year are directed toward outstanding students pursuing a degree in the natural and physical sciences. A separate application is required and selection of recipients is made by the Science Division. You may download the application from our Forms & Literature page.
Choose Ohio First (STEM) Scholarships $2,000-$3,000 per year are directed toward outstanding students pursuing a degree in the natural and physical sciences. Performance Awards

Muskingum offers several scholarships to students interested in participating or majoring in the following areas. Annual performance awards generally range from $500-$2000 in the following areas:

  • Music
  • Digital Media Design
  • Art
  • Forensics (speech/debate)
  • Journalism (print/broadcast)
  • Theatre

Performance awards are determined by the respective academic departments. Additional information on these scholarships and applications can be downloaded from our Forms & Literature page.

All awards are renewable dependent upon maintenance of a specified grade-point average and participation in departmental activities. First-time performance awards to upperclassmen are limited to $500 per award.

Muskingum Awards
Eligibility is determined at the time of acceptance and amounts are detrmined by the admission office.

Access Awards up to $5,000 per year
Special awards to selected entering students with exceptional financial need and/or to those who represent
underserved populations.

Horizon Awards up to $1,000 per year
Awarded to selected students based on involvement, achievement, and leadership in multiple areas.

Muskie Awards $4,000 to $9,500 per year for 2016-17
Automatically awarded to students who meet defined GPA and ACT/SAT standards, but who do not qualify for academic scholarships.

PLUS Opportunity Award (POA) up to $5,000 per year
Awarded to selected students in the PLUS program who meet defined GPA and ACT/SAT standards who
do not qualify for academic scholarships or Special Acknowledgement Awards.

Awards of Circumstance
Muskingum offers certain automatic Awards of Circumstance to full-time traditional undergraduate students who meet the defined conditions for the award. Financial need is not a consideration, but the awards are included as part of the financial aid package for students demonstrating need.

Appalachian Regional Grants $1,000 per year (beginning with the 2015-16 academic year)
Automatically awarded to students residing in the Appalachian Region, as defined by the  Appalachian Regional Commission. For additional information please see the  Appalachian Regional Grant information page.

Legacy Grants $3,000 per year (beginning with the 2015-16 academic year)
Awarded to students having one of the following Legacy connections:
dependent child, grandchild or sibling of a former Muskingum University student who has completed at least two years/four semesters at Muskingum University
sibling of a current Muskingum University student who is a dependent of the same parents.

Other cases where an immediate family relationship with a crrent Muskingum student or Alumnus exist (such as: step-parent,step-sibling) may also be approved by the Financial Aid Committee.

Students who qualify should complete the Legacy Grant information form.

General Motors EEOC Scholarship $1,000 per year
Awarded to minority students and female dependents of GM employees. A 2.8 cumulative GPA is required for renewal of the scholarship.

Clergy Grants $1,000 per year
Awarded to children of ordained Presbyterian Church (USA) ministers who are engaged in full-time church work.

Presbyterian Grants $1,000 per year
Automatically awarded to communicant members of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Students who qualify should complete the Presbyterian Grant information sheet.

External Scholarships
Whenever an outside organization makes us aware of a scholarship opportunity we will add it to our listing of External Scholarships. Students are responsible for letting Student Financial Services know of any External Scholarships they are receiving. The scholarships must be counted as part of their financial aid and may affect their eligibility for work-study, subsidized loans and in some cases grants or other scholarships. Students may use the External Scholarship Form to report scholarships they are receiving.


Total Award Maximums and Limits

Limitations are placed on the total amount of Muskingum-funded non-need based assistance which a student may receive. Please read the Scholarship & Award Provisions for more information on these limits.

Scholarship and Award Renewal
Students must be attending full-time and maintain a 3.0 GPA for renewal of scholarships and be making Satisfactory Academic Progress for renewal of Muskingum Awards and Awards of Circumstance.

Students must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 in order to ensure automatic renewal of all academic scholarships. Please read the Scholarship & Award Provisions so that you are aware of all requirements for keeping your scholarship.

Transfer Student Scholarships & Awards of Circumstance

Academic Scholarships

Students must be attending full-time and maintain a 3.0 GPA for renewal of scholarships and be making Satisfactory Academic Progress for renewal of Muskingum Awards and Awards of Circumstance.

Transfer students are considered for academic scholarships based on previous college work and, in some cases, the secondary school record. Transfer students may also apply for Science Division Scholarships and Performance Scholarships, but are not eligible to participate in the Academic Scholarship Program. The Muskingum Commitment does not apply to transfer students. The chart below can give you an estimate of your Base Scholarship Amount.

Undergraduate Scholarships & Awards of Circumstance for Returning Students

Academic Scholarships

Students must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.0 in order to ensure automatic renewal of all academic scholarships. Please read the Scholarship & Award Provisions so that you are aware of all requirements for keeping your scholarship.

Returning Student Scholarships $8,500 per year
Awarded to continuing students who were not awarded an academic scholarship as entering students, but who have achieved at least a 3.4 cumulative grade-point average after a minimum of two full-time semesters’ work at Muskingum.Student Financial Services staff review all students at the end of each semester and students who meet the criteria are automatically awarded the scholarship. Students who receive Returning Student Scholarships will no longer receive Muskie Awards and PLUS Opportunity Awards.

Endowed Departmental Scholarships
Awarded to enrolled students as part of Scholarship Recognition Day held in the spring of each year. Students are selected by faculty in academic departments for awards funded by donors to Muskingum. See individual academic departments for details on scholarships offered.
