Wachemo University is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service for the benefit of the citizens of Ethiopia and the world, and is dedicated to the discovery, development, communication, and application of knowledge in a wide range of academic and professional fields; it provides the highest quality programs gearing towards developing new understandings through research and creativity, and it also prepares students to assume roles in leadership, responsibility, and service to the society and the country at large.

The mission of the School is to produce competent professionals in the various disciplines of learning in the University at graduate and post graduate levels who could respond to the needs of society.

The SGS will be a center of academic excellence, integrating training, research and service which will help in training high caliber professionals. The School will be a leader in addressing societal needs and promoting research based training.


The major goal of the school is to educate various professionals in different disciplines who:

  • Identify, analyze and intervene on society’s problems
  • Undertake basic and applied research pertinent to the recognition, characterization and resolution of societal problems
  • Improve the practice of profession in their respective field
  • Contribute to societal development

Admission Requirement

Departments and interdepartmental degree programs may set admissions requirements such as:

  1. Official transcript and GPA calculations;
    1. Official transcripts of all baccalaureate and post baccalaureate course work must be submitted to the registrar.
    2. Transcripts are defined as official or “acceptable” as follows:
  • For domestic students the transcripts presented shall be attested to by original embossments of the seal of the issuing institution and the inscription of the valid signature of the certifying official;
  • For foreign students, a duplicate of the official transcript, issued by the institution, will bear an original embossment or inscription of the valid signature, or, if the institution does not issue duplicate records, the copy of the official transcript must be certified. All foreign credentials issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by an English translation.
  1.  Submitted records will not be returned to the applicant, but photocopies may be made for a nominal charge and either given to the applicant or forwarded to another institution at the applicant’s request.
  2. Professional degree holders must submit transcripts from each college and university attended to determine fulfilment of academic breadth requirements.
  3. For foreign students, test scores of the Graduate Record Examination (Aptitude and/or Subject), the Miller Analogies Test and Doppelt Mathematical Reasoning Test, Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), and/or higher total or sub-scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations shall be submitted to registrar
  4. Relevance of previous training

  7. Any other materials deemed appropriate by the admitting department or interdepartmental program (e.g. Auditions, interviews).

Credit Requirements and Course Load at the Graduate programs

  1. The total number of credit hours for course work shall be 24 – 32 for thesis-based programs, and 37- 48 for non-thesis-based programs or program to be completed with comprehensive written exam only.
  2. A total of 12 to 15 credit hours per semester shall normally be regarded as typical full load for a full-time candidate. If the semester load of a student is greater than 15 credit hours, it should be endorsed by the DC/ SC of the respective departments/ schools.
  3. A total of 9 to 12 credit hours per semester course work shall normally be regarded as full load for full time PhD candidate.
  4. A total of 6 and 12 credit hours per semester shall be allotted for Master`s and PhD thesis, respectively.
  5. Duration of study for regular Master’s students is two years. The duration for continuous and distance education programs (CDE) program would be 3 years. The PhD program has a prescribed duration of four years of full-time study in all academic units. A candidate shall complete at least 80% of the required duration of study at the University to qualify for graduation.
