Fikre Lemessa is the President of Jimma University, Ethiopia. He has chaired the Ethiopian Horticulture Science Society (EHSS) for years and has established strong linkage between the professional society and universities. He is also the chairman of the Ethiopian Universities HIV/IDS Forum. He is a governing board member of Mettu University, Ethiopia. He has organized different national and international conferences in which a large number of professionals, policy makers and decision makers participated. He is also the President of Jimma City Development Advisory Forum, Jimma, Ethiopia, which is playing catalytic role in the development of the city. He is also a member of Mentors of the African Entrepreneurship Award powered by BMC Bank of Africa and is helping and encouraging Africans to apply for the award.
He received his BSc and MSc from Haramaya University, Ethiopia. He got his PhD in Horticultural Sciences from the Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany. He attended trainings in Sanitary and Phytosanitary issues in International Trade at Texas A&M University, US; Training on Horticulture and Competence Based Curriculum Development, Wageningen University, the Netherlands; Design of Experiments, Data Analysis using SAS, and Publishing in Scientific Journals, Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Canada.
As a scholar, he has been involved in teaching, research and student advisory services for more than two decades. He has published more than 30 multidisciplinary research papers in national and international peer reviewed journals. He has also served as editor of different national and international journals. He has supervised more than 30 postgraduate students in national and international universities. He has been the national coordinator of two Netherland’s Government sponsored NUFFIC capacity building projects at Jimma University in which different universities and private institutions partnered. He has also coordinated a joint Ethio-Netherlands Project “Capacity Building for Scaling up of Evidence-based Best Practices in Agricultural Production in Ethiopia” at Jimma University.He has been awarded USAID-Borlaoug Institute fellowship (2009) at Texas A&M University, Excellence in Teaching and Excellence in Research by Jimma University (2007), and German Catholic Exchange Program (KAAD) PhD scholarship (2002).
