Gondar University Law School Vision
We envision the growth of our School to become one of the best law schools in Ethiopian universities producing passionate and skilled legal minds.
Gondar University Law School Mission
We actively strive for the enhancement of democracy, good governance, tolerance, equity, social justice and economic development for the people of Ethiopia through the provision of quality teaching, research and community service programs.
Gondar University Law School Work
The School of Law at the University of Gondar is one of the youngest academic units and as such we are still in the earliest stages of our development. Although we have been operational for less than 10 years we have rapidly evolved to a School that offers quality teaching, research and community services. We currently offer law courses both at LL.B and LL.M level through our regular and extension programs. At this time, 492 students are attending in the regular program whereas 91 students are enrolled in the evening program. We also run two postgraduate programs – LLM in Environmental and Water Laws, and LLM in Human Rights in both the regular and extension program.
The School currently employs 38 academic and 24 administrative staff who collaboratively support our teaching, research and community service activities. In addition to our own staff, we involve Lecturers from Bahir Dar, Civil Service, Mekelle, and Jima universities in postgraduate programs.
Our Law School is a founding member of Ethiopian Law schools Association has been chairing the Ethiopian Law schools’ consortium since September 2011.
The School of Law has been able to develop and successfully coordinate a free Legal Aid Advice Service to vulnerable and disadvantaged people living in Gondar and the surrounding regions. We also currently run a Moot Court Center in order to allow students to develop their legal advocacy skills. To find out more about please visit our community services page.
The School of Law was launched as a department in 2005, a year after the University’s establishment. We were quickly able to transform to School level in August 2006 headed by a Dean. Since its inception the School has proven very popular, beginning its academic activities with 61 students in its very first year. As a result of valuable support from our staff and the University management structure we have been able to enjoy a rapid state of development within the last 8 years.
Our Partners and Collaborators
Moreover, the school has running its duties in collaboration with Ministry of Justice, Justice and Legal System Research Institute (JLSRI), Higher Education Strategy Center (HESC) and Ethiopian Human Rights Commission.
