PART I: GENERAL PROVISIONS

Article 1:       Short Title

This Legislation may be cited as “Senate Legislation of Arba Minch University 2013.”

Article 2:      Issuing Authority

This Legislation is issued by the senate of Arba Minch University pursuant to the powers vested in it by Article 49 of the Higher Education Proclamation No. 650/2009.

Article 3:      Definitions

In this Legislation, unless the context requires otherwise:

  • “Academic staff” shall mean a member of the University employed in the capacity of teaching and/or research and other employees considered as an academic staff by the decision of the senate.
  • “Academic unit” means a college, school, an institute, a department or a center established as a constituent unit of the University.
  • “Administrative Support staff” shall mean personnel of the University employed to provide administrative support services.
  • “Board” shall mean the University Board established in accordance with Article 43 of the proclamation.
  • “Center/ Unit” shall mean a unit that is directly attached to the University for defined

purpose.

  • “College/Institute Council” shall mean the academic unit council of each college and the Institute, established under the provisions of Article 43 of the proclamation.
  • “Dean” shall mean an executive manager of a college.
  • “Department Assembly” shall mean the assembly of academic staff members of each department.
  • “Department” shall mean the unit of a College or an Institute that offer courses in which degrees, diplomas or certificates may be obtained.

  • “Director” shall mean the executive manager of an institute/school or offices of the

University.

  • “Head” shall mean an executive manager of a department/unit.
  • “Institute”/”College”/”School” shall mean an academic unit of the University which may constitute Departments and other academic units.
  • “Legislation” shall mean the Senate Legislation of Arba Minch University 2012.
  • “Module” shall mean a set of courses within a program. A set of modules would enable one to finish a program of study and graduate thereof.
  • “Office of the Senate” shall mean the place where senate meeting is held and files and documents of the senate are kept.
  • “Post Graduate Programme (PG)” shall mean an academic unit of the university which may constitute programs that offer courses of study in which a specialized degree may be obtained.
  • “President” shall mean the chief executive officer of the university appointed in accordance with article 52 and 53 of the proclamation.
  • “Proclamation” shall mean the Higher Education Proclamation No. 650/2009.
  • “Program” shall mean a set of modules in the undergraduate and graduate study disciplines.
  • “Registrar” shall mean an executive manager responsible for operations pertaining to student registration and academic records.
  • “Regulation” shall mean the Arba Minch University Reestablishment Charter of the

Council of Ministers regulation number 235/2011

  • “Research and Development” shall mean and include research extension, publication, consultancy and industry/ community -University linkage
  • “Scientific Director” shall mean the executive officer of the Arba Minch Institute of

Technology (AMiT).

  • “Senate” shall mean the Senate of the University established under the provision of article 49 of the proclamation and article 6 of the regulation.
  • “Student” shall mean any person admitted and registered to graduate or undergraduate programs at the University in the regular, CDEP or short term trainings.
  • “Technical support staff” shall mean non-administrative personnel employed to support the teaching-learning and research processes and non-academic professional medical personnel employed in the University teaching hospital and the library.
  • “University Community” shall mean all the students and staff of the University.
  • “University” shall mean the Arba Minch University established as per the reestablishment regulation No. 235/2011 of the Council of Ministers Charter of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
  • “Vice President/s” shall mean the executive officer/s of the university appointed in accordance with article 52 and 54 of the proclamation.

Article 4:     Gender Reference

Unless the context requires otherwise, the provisions of this legislation set out in the masculine gender shall also apply to the feminine gender.
