Arba Minch University Electrical Engineering

Erstwhile, Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI) was established in 1986. AWTI then used to offer short and long-term trainings, conducting research and rendering consultancy services in the water sector namely: Irrigation Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering and Sanitation Engineering. Till 1993, AWTI was governed by the Water Resource Commission (WRC) and then came under the umbrella of Ministry of Education (MoE).
In 1997, AWTI diversified its training and research streams to encompass three B.Sc degree programs i.e. Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering. In 2001, Department of Meteorology was established to provide training at diploma and degree level. Subsequently, Computer Science and Information Technology and Architecture were added.
In 2002, AWTI rolled in PG programs in Hydraulics and Hydropower and Irrigation Engineering. Additional programs i.e. Hydrology and Water Resource and Meteorology were introduced in 2004-5.
Presently christened as Institute of Technology, it has made remarkable achievement over the years and currently hosting almost half of students of the University.
The institute remains the main hub for water resources engineering education and research since its establishment and aspires to be center of excellence in these areas in Africa. It’s being headed by Scientific Director and Managing Director with semi-autonomous administrative power.
Besides, it also engages itself in tertiary level education (PhD program) while promoting the ever increasing demand of research and teaching staff in specialized subjects. PhD in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering has been launched in 2014.
The institute has established Water Resources Research Center to lead multi-stakeholder and multidisciplinary projects aimed at fostering higher-level research and technology transfer.
Students’ engagement in practice-oriented education is the core part of the engineering programs whereby students are expected to get attached to various industries and business firms that ultimately empower them with practical hands-on knowledge. The full one-semester engagement with industries tends to enhance the academic caliber of students in practical terms and make them proactive and solution-seeker in this dynamic global environment.
The institute’s effort while collaborating with national and international organizations in promoting research and specialized trainings in water resources and civil engineering become exemplary in terms of technology transfer and soliciting funds.
With country-wide revision and subsequent restructuring of engineering and technology education, in 2010 water technology institute and the technology faculty in Arba Minch University were merged to establish Institute of Technology as we know it today.
